Balance Begins in Nature: Five Elements
Nature is what sustains and nourishes us. It is also our greatest teacher. Humans have spent countless hours watching and analysing Nature in all its forms to better understand life and our own personal place within it. It's only in modern culture that the mass has lost this connection and understanding of the rhythms of life that present themselves through the five elements.
In ancient China, Taoist scholars and mystics understood that everything in the Universe comes out of the ‘unnamable’ , the TAO, which manifests as the dual principles of Yin and Yang, i.e. heaven and earth, day and night, masculine and feminine energies.
Along with the law of Yin and Yang, the ancient Taoists observed a pattern of expression in nature that they interpreted as and named, the Five Elements.
These elements, or energies, were described as Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood were understood to be the energetic building blocks from which all material substance in the phenomenal world is composed.
Everything in existence contains some quantity of all five elements, however, according to the theory one of the five so particularly predominates itself in each thing, and may thus be categorized accordingly.
When these five elements manifest within us in a balanced and harmonious state, we experience health, well-being and the joy of being alive. When we do not cycle through the five elements, the spirit is not fully integrated in our lives. This lack of integration causes great unhappiness, alienation and disease in the modern world.
